I was invited to speak at Making Cosmetics 2016 one of the most interactive industry events created for people within the beauty industry. I love attending this event each year as I get to meet with old industry friends as well as make new contacts.
Of course I was thrilled to be asked to speak on my knowledge, the critical points in the concept to shelf process and share my story on ‘how to start your own beauty brand‘. I passed on my most significant lessons learnt, as well as offered key business frameworks and tools for success. I only had twenty minutes so could only touch important topics that deserve 4 hours such as product testing, safety, preservation, EU Cosmetic Products Regulation (EC 1223/2009) and having adequate claims substantiation. My overview were these key 5 tips:
- Have a REMARKable idea, test it, conduct in depth research, interview people, learn, develop it more and test it again.
- Project Manage: Begin with the end in mind- Write down your vision, tasks, activities, milestones, costs, sources and suppliers and organise yourself.
- Legal Issues: Protect yourself and be compliant.
- Take the time to learn and know your market.
- For all those things you cannot do: Ask for help, seek advice, get a mentor, recruit a team, hire a professional.
I loved every second of sharing, including answering the flood of questions that came after my presentation. It solidified my passion not only for the beauty business but for sharing, empowering and helping other’s on their business journey. You may have seen me promote other businesses and blog about other brands like HERE so you may understand my excitement to introduce The Indie Beauty Hub. The Independent Beauty Hub (Indie Beauty Hub) is a London based collective of independent beauty brand owners. We host networking events and seminars that guide you through the process of creating a successful beauty brand. This is an outlet which I co-founded with amazing beauty brands and I am especially proud to be apart of as it enables me to act on my passion to empower, help and share with other’s. Twenty minutes at Making Cosmetics was great but having a not-for-profit organisation focussed on helping beauty brands is a dream.
